Winner of the inaugural season in 2008, Rajasthan Royals have returned to the Indian Premier League fold after a two-year suspension. Rajasthan retained Steve Smith and then were left with a purse worth Rs 67.5 crore. They spent Rs 65.85 crore to buy 22 players.
"Obviously we miss stature of a player like Smith and the quality he brings but as a team, we are absolutely prepared and we obviously got his replacement as Heinrich Klaasen.

Ajinkya Rahane becoming the new Rajasthan Royals captain, he is pleased to share his elation of being chosen for this role with all of the team’s fans in India and around the world.
Dependability is his best virtue. He has proved his ability and temperament to lead whenever he was handed the responsibility. He captained team India in one of the most important Test matches against Australia and won the series 2-1 with India retaining the top spot in the ICC rankings in 2017.
Rahane refrained from commenting on Smith's one-year ban but said that the former Australian skipper should still be respected as a player for his outstanding achievements on a cricket field.
Smith had a marvellous season last year, scoring 472 runs in 15 games for now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, taking his side to the final of the tournament in the process. Having failed in the format early on, his T20 game has sharpened over the years.
Royals have called in South Africa's Heinrich Klaasen as replacement but it would be right to say that he does not come with the same skill-set. Also, Klaasen finding a place in the side in presence of Jos Buttler, who will be the first choice wicket-keeper, looks unlikely.
On 14 July 2015 the verdict reached by a panel appointed by India's Supreme Court suspended Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings for two years over a corruption and match fixing scandal, meaning they could not participate in both the 2016 and 2017 IPL tournaments.
